Lie on Your Back Before Surgery

Training Yourself to Lie on Your Back Before Surgery Training Yourself to Lie on Your Back Before Surgery

When you have a cosmetic procedure, you will need to make some adjustments to your lifestyle to aid you in your recovery. One of those lifestyle changes is learning to sleep on your back. Sleeping on your back is a necessity after any kind of breast surgery, but it is also a good idea with other types of surgery. Here’s why you should train yourself to sleep on your back and how to do so.

Effects of Side or Tummy Sleeping

There are many potential side effects and harmful outcomes that could happen if you sleep on your side or tummy after plastic surgery. If you have breast augmentation, breast revision, breast reduction, or a breast lift, sleeping on your stomach or side can cause fluid buildup, capsular contracture, and other medical complications, as well as being excruciatingly painful. With breast augmentation or revision, your implants may also become displaced and need to be corrected.

If you have other types of surgery, such as a tummy tuck or even a face lift, sleeping on your tummy or side can make it difficult for wounds to heal. Rubbing the incisions on your pillow or sheets will be painful as well.

How to Teach Yourself to Lie On Your Back

Teaching yourself to sleep on your back is difficult, mostly because you are asleep and have no conscious thought to make yourself stay that way. The best way to make sure that you will sleep on your back is to get extra pillows or a body pillow to lay on either side of you when you go to bed. You won’t be able to turn over in your sleep, and eventually your body will stay that way while you sleep without the pillows.
