Three Potential Reasons for Breast Implant Removal or Revision
When you got your breast implants, you may not have considered that they would ever need to be removed. But life changes, and sometimes breast implants need to change as well. Problems with the breast or implant could also cause implants to need removal or revision. Here are three potential reasons for this procedure.
Capsular Contracture
Capsular contracture is a complication of breast augmentation surgery that sometimes does not appear for several months or years down the road. This occurs when scar tissue from the original breast augmentation procedure forms a tight capsule around the breast implant and contracts around the implant. This can cause significant pain, but it can be remedied with either breast implant removal or revision surgery.
Problems with Implants
Few women have issues with their implants, but problems can occur. Implants can shift, wrinkle, or even rupture over time. When these issues arise, it changes the way your breasts look and feel. These issues can be resolved with revision surgery in which the surgeon will remove the problematic implants and replace them with new implants. Alternatively, you could have the implants removed altogether.
Breast Cancer
Some women need to remove their breast implants to receive treatment for breast cancer. While you can undergo some breast cancer treatments without removing your implants, some treatments require it. Your oncologist may also recommend that you have breast implant removal if you need to undergo surgery.
