Submental Liposuction

Submental liposuction can be the answer to those patients who have fullness under their neck with little excess loose skin. This is sometimes described as a “waddle”. If a patient has excess or loose skin, a neck lift is a more proper solution than submental liposuction alone.

How is submental liposuction performed?

The procedure takes about 1 hour and can be performed under local anesthesia or with sedation. A very small incision is made under the chin and the area is infused with liposuction fluid. A small liposuction cannula is then used to remove the fat from under the neck. The incision is sutured and a bandaid and compression garment is applied.

What is the recovery period?

There is typically minimal discomfort. There may be a small amount of bruising for the first few days after surgery. It is important to wear the compression garment as instructed which helps with healing. The garment is to be worn as much as possible for the first few days and then at night for the next few weeks.
