Learn all about the benefits of a breast lift surgery

Breasts have always been one of the most prominent features a woman loves about her body; It improves her body shape and could help boost her confidence. Unfortunately, in some cases, breasts that have lost their youthful shape may cause a loss of enthusiasm. Sagging breasts, excess skin obtained from weight loss or weight gain, or general unhappiness with the breast’s shape, can make you feel self-conscious and depressed. Breast lifts are designed to help you overcome these hurdles and restore your breast to a more youthful shape and proportion.

What is a breast lift?

Breast lift is a surgical procedure referred to as Mastopexy. A plastic surgeon carries it out to help change the shape of the breast. It is not a size-changing procedure. Instead, it is a procedure to help enhance the look of a patient’s breasts and help, restore a youthful appearance and confidence and give her the feminine breast proportions the client desires. It usually takes about 1-3 hours to complete a breast lift surgery, depending on what type of breast lift you want.

Breast lifts help remove excess and stretched-out skin, replacing the breast tissue and raising the nipple/areola, creating more symmetrical lifted and natural-looking breasts. Breast lift surgeries mainly involve making an incision and removing excess tissue, which requires placing the patient under local anesthesia.

Types of breast lifts

Different spectrums of breast lift techniques can be carried out, depending on your goals, the amount of breast tissue available, and the amount of excess skin to be removed.

Vertical or lollipop breast lift

Lollipop mastopexy is designed for women who require a medium amount of surgical correction. The patient doesn’t need a significant amount of breast lift with this procedure to get a vibrant and youthful breast appearance. The surgery typically takes about three and a half hours to complete. This breast lift technique includes a vertical incision from the bottom of the areola to the inframammary crease and a circular incision made around the areola. These two incisions look like the outline of a lollipop hence the name, Lollipop breast lift. This procedure allows for greater flexibility while keeping the incision as small and hidden as possible.

Crescent lift

The Crescent lift works best for small breasts with minor sagging. This procedure entails making a crescent incision along the top half of your areola by your plastic surgeon. The breast procedure takes about 2-3 hours, and patients can return to work after a week. The crescent lift goes with a breast augmentation procedure.

Breast augmentation means breast implants are inserted into the breast to increase its size and shape. Breast augmentation with crescent lift where only a lift of the nipple area is needed, not the breast itself. A crescent lift alongside breast augmentation is suitable for long-term results to help achieve a youthful, firm breast. A crescent lift is first achieved before implants; the scars are minimal and may become unnoticeable after some time.

Anchor lift

This breast lift procedure is usually recommended for those with excessively sagging breasts. Other breast lifts such as lollipop and crescent lifts cannot correct excess sagging as an anchor lift would. This procedure derives its name from the surgical incision made performed in the shape of a nautical anchor.

With this procedure, three incisions are made: An incision is made around the edge of the areola, the second incision is made vertically downwards from the areola to the inframammary crease, and the third is a horizontal incision along the inframammary crease under the breast in a curving or crescent shape. The surgery takes 2-3 hours, and patients can usually go home the same day. The incisions take about two weeks to heal properly. The scars from the Anchor mastopexy eventually become less visible and fade away.

Per-areolar or donut lift

The Donut lift can also be called a mini breast lift. The periareolar mastopexy is usually carried out for women with a mild form of breast sagging or ptosis. A donut breast lift is a technique designed to help raise or lift the nipple to a more aesthetically pleasing level as regards what the patient wants.

Although, there are limitations to how much nipple elevation can be achieved as regards this procedure. That is why at The Julian Institute of Plastic Surgery, we take our time to clarify our patient’s goals and give them a list of options that can be carried out regarding their goals.

The incision for this procedure is confined only to the areola, which is made smaller in most cases, and a breast implant may be placed if required. A circle incision is then made around the first incision but broader this time and breast tissue between these incisions are removed on rare occasions. The resized areola is then stitched into an elevated position. They require relatively more time to heal than other breast lift operations.

Importance of a breast lift

A breast lift can help women who feel uncomfortable about their breast shape, have asymmetrical breasts, breasts that look longer or flatter, breasts that point downwards (sagging breasts), or women who just went through weight loss or pregnancy. If you have excess skin and breast tissue, a breast lift can restore and lift for a more youthful contour.
