Breast Implant Removal or Revision Surgery

Breast implant removal has become a hot topic, and there really isn’t a reason for it other than sensationalism. The bottom line is that breast implants have always needed to be removed, and not because there was anything wrong with them. Here are the most common reasons women get a breast implant removal or revision.

Wanting to change breast size

Some women decide that they aren’t interested in having large breasts once they reach a certain age. This might make them want to have their implants removed altogether or traded out for smaller, more natural implants. This procedure will also require a breast lift.

The implants have become punctured, compromised, or just reached the end of their lifecycle.

Implants can need to be removed for many reasons, but these are the most common. Saline implants that are punctured will leak out harmlessly in the body, but the silicone shell will still need to be removed and some remedy decided. You will know right away if that happens. On the other hand, you might not notice a puncture in your silicone implants until the shape of your breast changes.

In addition, your implants could simply just be old. Just as replacement joints are not designed to last more than about 10 to 15 years, so too are internal medical devices like breast implants. You will have to get your implants removed or replaced within about a decade after having the initial breast implant surgery.

Complications from breast implants

In some rare cases, scar tissue can contract around the implant, pulling against the muscle and causing pain and discomfort. This requires a revision surgery in which the scar tissue is removed and the implant released. From there it can be decided if the implants will be revised or restored as before.
